And the
introduction of Deans cubes(which are just a bad knock off of golden
beads). I was lectured just the other day by a teacher on a fabulous new
system she had seen where a woman had colour coded and put shapes to help with
defining words. She was most put out when I went to my drawer of tricks and
pulled out a box of Montessori grammar symbols. I would also add Khan Academy
relies on something many people don’t have access to decent internet. It is
also not suitable for young children. I agree it is not a new idea for mastery
of skills. However it is the best implementation of it so far. Ideas are a dime
a dozen.

Putting them
into practice and the way it is put into practice is what matters. It’s really
incredible what he has managed to provide for free! I paid approx. $1100.00 for
Montessori preschool and kindergarten and it didn’t do much for us. It was
ultimately it was practice and reinforcement with programs like khan academy
that brought results. Montessori doesn’t conform to college standards so most
kids who went to a Montessori school struggle once they go to a regular
classroom setting. Think about how a doctor gets better. It’s not from lectures
and reading. It’s mostly from doing.
There’s huge
money in school testing by the way. So guess why the model doesn’t change. Interesting
because studies in Europe have show the exact opposite partly because
Montessori is all about actually doing. The UK Government is looking at ways to
get more Montessori techniques into standard classrooms. But that is not the
point I was making. The point I was making is that "Mastery" is not a
new idea and everyone is acting as if there has been a huge Eureka moment. I am
sure Montessori is not the only alternative educations system to have used the
mastery principle. I am also not knocking what this man has done.
Montessori
isn't about learning to mastery it is teaching the children skills that they
tend towards. Working with the nature of the child rather than forcing them to
learn the 'standard' subjects. It really boils down to school funding, too big
class rooms and not enough teachers. I said the exact same thing in the group
where this was shared. It's such a shame that these concepts were put into
place by Maria Montessori decades ago and there's still not enough awareness or
backing for Montessori programs, especially at the elementary level. And
now research is discovering what she already had discovered. It's like
reinventing the wheel and wasting so much time!
Well that is like asking why all people are
not a certain religion. Lots of countries do offer Montessori as part of
their state educations system. many of the countries that do rank more highly
in the international education tables as well. Also as an education specialist
creating a system for a government program you would want to come up with your
own system you so you can make money out of it. There is no personal gain in
recommending a old system. That has been seen over and over again as people
"invent" educational materials that are knock offs of Montessori and
other established systems. As I have said higher up this thread.
I am not taking away from what this man has
done nor am I suggesting that Montessori is the only system that uses
mastery..not sure which other systems use mastery but I am sure they are out
there. My comment was "I love the way everyone is acting like this is a
new idea, it's not. It is the only public school Montessori program in a large
Southern California school district. Hopefully, this “new” idea will finally be
understood and used extensively in public schools. it would be logical to
find out what programs work throughout the country and use them. Montessori
concepts will probably be found in these programs.
It’s logical to find out what works to educate
students who love school, are challenged, are great problem solvers and
communicators, and are logical and kind. I was looking for a Montessori algebra
or advanced mathematics course and it is non existent. Santana, there is a
Hands-on Equations program that I used. Algebra was my kids' favorite subject.
It has 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. I always started with 4th if the student
hadn't used it before. They quickly got up to their grade level. I used
the classroom sets where the kids could build the problems and the app for
added practice, in the classroom and at home, for the kids who needed it.
